John McCarthy is professor of computer science at Stanford University
and director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
His scientific activities include work in artificial intelligence
and in personal applications of computers.  He has
studied the relations of technology and society including the
politics of energy supply.  He is a member of the Steering
Committee of Scientists and Engineers for Secure Energy, an
organization concerned with overcoming obstacles to a secure
energy supply for America.
